Helping the Environment

Everyone cares about conservation and the environment. However, people are using more wood and forest products today than ever before, and the amount of wood used per person continues to increase yearly. This has put tremendous strain on our forest resource base. As our wood supply become tight, the strain continues to increase and this is why the field of Wood Science and Technology is so important. Students learn how to use wood in the most efficient ways and to produce long-lasting products to conserve our wood resources.

Recycling and waste reduction are important, and efforts continue on these fronts. But the public has been slow to adopt many of these consumer-based solutions. A complementary approach is to develop ways to reduce waste by producing the forest products we use more efficiently and effectively, including modern recycling technology. The only groups with the technical knowledge to implement the later solutions are Wood Scientists and Wood Engineers.

Why should you obtain a Wood Science and Technology education?

For students interested in conservation of our natural resources, Wood Science and Technology is where they can have the greatest impact. Understanding how to conserve and utilize the materials our forests provide in the most efficient manner is the goal of a Wood Science and Technology major. Our program provides students with the state of the art technical engineering skills needed to insure strong employment potential. Graduates with strong technical backgrounds in Wood Science and Technology are in great demand and our graduates take on leading roles in the conservation of our natural resources.

At the University of Maine, we invite YOU to determine the future.
